Ryerson’s women’s hockey team ended the 2015 portion of their season with another loss when they faced Nipissing University at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Nov. 28.
The Nipissing Lakers came in hard and kept an intense pace the entire game, beating Ryerson 2-0 at the final buzzer.
The Lakers scored both their goals on the power play. The first goal was made just six minutes into the first period and the second goal was scored seven minutes into the final period.
“I think they had a little more patience and that was the difference for them,” said head coach Lisa Haley.
The Rams took 40 shots on net and were still unable to put one puck in, while Nipissing took 36 shots on net in total.
“When you get 40 shots and you still can’t put one in, it’s definitely frustrating,” said Rams forward Alex Rodriguez. “They capitalized a lot more than we did.”
“I think sometimes we are not managing the puck well offensively and other nights we have unfortunate luck. That was the situation tonight,” said Haley.
The Lakers are a bigger team compared to the Rams, something Rodriguez says the Rams needed to work through.
“We know Nipissing is a really gritty team,” said Rodriguez. “They’re a physical, big team compared to us, so we definitely got to be careful going into the boards, making sure that we’re competing with just as much intensity as they are.”
The Rams will take about a month’s break before returning to the ice on Jan. 9 to face Nipissing again in North Bay.
Upon their return, Haley said that the team will have to focus on scoring and being able to keep possession.
The Rams now have lost five games in a row, keeping them in last place in the Ontario University Athletics standings. They’ve scored two goals in that span and have been shutout three times.
The 2015 portion of their season has proved to be a tough one for the Rams, only winning one out of eleven of their conference games.
