By Daniel Rocchi

Ryerson Athletics announced the appointment of the first female full-time assistant coach in CIS men’s hockey history on Friday.

Kori Cheverie will join the men’s hockey team coaching staff for the upcoming 2016-2017 season as former associate coach Johnny Duco moves into the interim head coaching role.

Cheverie has been a skate training specialist for Ryerson for the past three years. She is currently in New Zealand with fellow skate training instructor Vanessa Stratton, working with the Leaside Wildcats girl’s hockey organization and the New Zealand national team coaching staff to help develop women’s hockey in the country.

Cheverie plays professional hockey for the Toronto Furies of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), and was a three-time Atlantic University Sport (AUS) First-Team All-Star and two-time St. Mary’s Female Athlete of the Year while playing for the women’s hockey team at St. Mary’s University in Halifax.

Cheverie and Stratton will return from New Zealand on August 14, with Cheverie assuming her new role the following day.

The men’s hockey team opens their season on October 6 against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
