The Ryerson Image Centre isn’t just a pretty, multicoloured, glow in the dark face. It’s also the host to some cool gallery openings and events over the next month. Here’s what you should be checking out this November:
Sept. 14 – Dec. 4, 2016
The exhibition, The Edge of the Earth: Climate Change in Photography and Video, premiered Sep. 14 and will continue until the beginning of December. The Edge of the Earth showcases climate change through photography and video. It includes historic and recent work by artists worldwide, and photojournalism from Black Star Collection. The exhibit “challenges our environmental consciousness,” according to the RIC webpage, which also states that the idea of The Edge of the Earth is to reconsider how we view the climate change issue and “future consequences” caused by human impact on earth.
Nov. 2, 2016
Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. the RIC welcomes the public to celebrate the opening day of the newest exhibition Simone Estrin: A shift in the landscape. For every new exhibition there are receptions, gallery tours, lectures, and screenings.
Nov. 2 – Dec. 4, 2016
Simone Estrin: A shift in the landscape is a documentary film about American sculptor, Richard Serra, and his work over two-years called Shift from 1970 to 1972. Shift is a sculpture made of six large concrete walls that make a zigzag over a field in King City, Ontario – about a 45 minute drive from Ryerson University. The film focuses on the struggle to protect Serra’s work after the property owners placed a chain-link fence around the farmland. Through the exhibition “viewers are given unprecedented access to this unknown masterpiece and the creative process behind,” according to the RIC webpage. RIC’s Exhibitions Curator Gaëlle Morel said the film is “fascinating to see this famous artist be faced with a big threat on one of his seminal-works.”

Dr. Bénédicte Ramade, the guest curator for The Edge of the Earth: Climate Change in Photography and Video will give a tour of the exhibition at 6 p.m.
Nov. 24, 2016
At 12 p.m. the Research Centre will host “Noon Time Collection Talk” with Mona Filip, the Koffler Gallery Director and Curator at the Koffler Centre of the Arts. The collection talk will focus on a portion of RIC’s photography collections.
