Men’s hockey: Rams hold on to beat U of T

By Daniel Rocchi

  • Ryerson moves into first place in OUA West
  • Rams score three straight second-period goals
  • U of T’s late-game comeback falls short

Ryerson’s men’s hockey team held on to claim a 6-4 win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday night.

The win gives Ryerson a 6-2-1 record, moving the Rams into first in the OUA West. The winless Varsity Blues sit last in the division at 0-7-2.

Ryerson was up 4-1 after forty minutes, but U of T scored the first of three third-period goals just 18 seconds in to kick off a wild frame. Rams captain Michael Fine scored the eventual game-winner near the three-minute mark, going five-hole on Toronto’s Andrew Hunt from below the hashmarks. Matt Heffernan responded for the Varsity Blues just 20 seconds later as the teams combined for three goals in just 2:59.

Charlie Connell pulled Toronto to within a goal with a shot along the ice that beat Ryerson goalie Taylor Dupuis near the halfway point of the third, but that was as close as the Varsity Blues would get. Fine sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 28 seconds left as Dupuis made 29 saves for his first win of the season.

Ryerson scored three unanswered goals in the second period, as Andreas Tsogkas and Fab Ricci both scored their first goals of the year before Alex Basso netted a shorthanded goal for his second tally with 26 seconds left in the frame. Ricci, who also had an assist, recorded his first two U Sports points in his second game as a Ram.

Mitchell Theoret opened the scoring for Ryerson three-and-a-half minutes into the first period, skating in and roofing his second goal of the season with a short-side snipe over Hunt’s glove.  Toronto’s Dean Klomp tied the game 1-1 from the top of the goal crease barely 90 seconds later. Hunt finished with 27 saves for the Varsity Blues.

UP NEXT: The Rams continue their five-game homestand on Nov. 11 when they welcome the Nipissing Lakers to the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:15 pm.
