Looking back at this year’s best and most contentious stories

6 FEST SHENANIGANS

The 2016-2017 school year will forever be known as the year of the 6 Fest refunds. The Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU) two-day concert became a shit show when the date for the concert changed which led to hundreds of students requesting refunds. This led to the resignation of five board members, and vice-president student life & events Harman Singh almost getting impeached.

ANTI-SEMITISM ACCUSATIONS

The RSU executives were accused of anti-Semitism after The Eyeopener obtained screenshots of the executives initiating a planned walk-out at the Semi-Annual General Meeting (SAGM) on Nov. 29. The walk-out occurred during a motion for the RSU to organize a Holocaust education week. The accusations made national headlines including the Toronto Star.

PRO-LIFE DEMONSTRATORS

Pro-life demonstrators have been on Gould Street since the beginning of the school year, which lead to the formation of the Reproductive Justice Collective (RJC). Currently, neither Ryerson security or the RSU can legally remove pro-life advocates from Gould Street, as the property is owned by the City of Toronto. Ryerson also wants to remain objective and not take any political positions.
