Despite showing their ability to be resilient, the Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team lost in overtime against the York Lions on Thursday.
The Rams came out of the gate slowly, finding themselves heavily outshot by the Lions throughout the entire first and second periods. Luckily for the Rams, the stellar play of third-year goaltender, Fanny Vigeant, kept the game even at zero at the end of the opening frame.
Despite the strong performance from the Quebec native, the Lions eventually found the back of the net, scoring off of a tough wrist shot from the point that got through traffic in front of the net in the middle of the second period.
The goal would turn out to be a wake up call for the Rams, as the team started to get hot and create chances. After a penalty by the Lions, two fourth-year players from the Rams took it upon themselves to get their team on the board. A quick wrist shot from Rams defender Laura Ball was tipped by teammate, and last year’s leading scorer, Kryshanda Green.
Unfortunately for Ryerson, the Lions didn’t waste any time regaining the lead, scoring a few minutes later to give themselves a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
In the final period of regulation, Green showcased her ability to step up in a clutch situation, pulling off an amazing individual effort to set up rookie forward Natalie Pantaleo to even the score at two goals a piece. Both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the game, sending the game to overtime.
With only 1:11 left in the frame, the Lions would end up putting the game to bed with a quick shot from the point to give themselves a 3-2 win.
Vigeant played remarkably despite receiving the loss, making 36 saves in 60 minutes of game-time. Ryerson will have to wait until the new year to avenge their defeat, as the two teams won’t play each other again until February.
UP NEXT: The Rams will play their final pre-season game against the University of Toronto on Friday Oct. 5. Puck drop is scheudled for 7:00 p.m.
