Rams struggle to score, fall to the Varsity Blues on the road

By Raine Hernandez

The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team took a tough loss at Varsity Arena, losing 7-1 to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Nov. 1.

Coming off of a close home loss against the Guelph Gryphons, the Rams made the short commute to a sold out crowd at the Varsity Blues’ home rink, as local schools from across the Greater Toronto Area watched the Varsity Blues challenge their crosstown-rivals.

Heading into the matchup, the Rams were sitting with a 3-1 record with wins against Windsor, Nipissing and Laurentian.

Riding the hot streak of forwards Lauren Nicholson and Madison Lalonde, who have combined for nine points in four games, Ryerson got off to a quick start. However, they’d be without star forward Kryshanda Green, who was absent due to a lower body injury.

Early into the first period, the Rams would strike first after Camryn Tait capitalized on a scoring opportunity set up by Lalonde to gain a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last long, as Toronto found the back of the net on two consecutive chances to make it a 2-1 game.

In the second period, the Varsity Blues kept on coming. Toronto chased and pressured Rams rookie goaltender Natalie Thompson, scoring another three goals to increase their lead to 5-1. Throughout the second, the road team couldn’t generate quality scoring chances, despite two power play opportunities during the frame.

The same story would continue in the third period, as Varsity Blues forward Taylor Trussler completed the hat-trick after a perfect wrist-shot from the slot to beat Fanny Vigneant, who replaced Thompson late in the second period.

The Varsity Blues would eventually add their seventh goal mid-way through the final frame to finish with nothing short of a commanding win at home.

UP NEXT: The Rams will look to bounce back when they host the Brock Badgers at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Nov. 3. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
