Students and faculty at Ryerson University came together to honour members of the Canadian Armed Forces at a Remembrance Day ceremony on campus on Nov. 9.
Nearly 40 community members gathered underneath the archway beside the Ryerson Theatre in the Kerr Hall Quad for the ceremony, which was held two days before Nov. 11. This year, Remembrance Day will mark the 100-year anniversary since the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War.
“As we gather today, I encourage you to reflect and remember those who are in conflict,” said university President Mohamed Lachemi.

“O Canada” was sung by Kathryn Rowan, manager of academic administration for the Faculty of Arts. The national anthem was followed by a reading of war poem, In Flander’s Fields, recited by Savreen Gosal, vice-president operations for the Ryerson Students’ Union.
“Today we come together not only to remember those who have passed, but the atrocities [of war] and what they have done to the world,” said Ryerson’s Vice-President academic Michael Benarroch.
The Ryerson community stood together to observe a moment of silence to remember the men and women who have died during the conflict, as well as those who currently serve in the armed forces.
The ceremony ended with the trumpet’s bugle call of The Last Post and members of the Ryerson community pinning their poppy on wreaths.
