McCool helps Rams end four-game losing in OT vs. Warriors

By Raine Hernandez

The Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team claimed their first win of 2019, defeating the Waterloo Warriors by a score of 6-5 in overtime to end their four-game losing streak on Jan. 10 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

In overtime, off a great play from forwards Matt Mistele and Gregory DiTomaso, centerman Hayden McCool would wire it past Trevor Martin to give his team the 6-5 victory. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and gave Ryerson their first win since November against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

“Every team goes through adversity,” Rams forward David Miller said of the drought.

The last time that the two schools squared off against each other it also went into overtime. A game in which Steven Harland scored the game-winner in Waterloo.

During this losing streak, the Rams have had difficulty getting off to a strong start. It would continue against the Warriors, as the Rams allowed a goal just 30 seconds into the game. Forced to play catch-up, the Rams were able to get into a rhythm as Mistele and David Miller would score a minute apart from each other to give Ryerson the 2-1 lead.

The second period would be where both teams came alive, offensively.

Both teams combined for seven goals in the middle frame, as Waterloo notched four goals past Taylor Dupuis. DiTomaso, Cavin Leth, and Mathew Santos scored for Ryerson, making it 5-5 after 40 minutes.

However, with only 12 seconds left in the period, things got scary for the Rams as Dupuis left the game due to injury. This meant first-year goaltender and former Erie Otter Troy Timpano would make his Ryerson Rams debut.

In the final frame, both teams were held scoreless due to the goaltending play from Timpano and Waterloo’s Trevor Martin. In overtime, McCool would slot his 10th goal of the year to give his team the eventual win.

UP NEXT: The Rams will travel to Waterloo to play the other school from that city, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop will be on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
