Two attempted robberies within 24 hours leave three victims injured

By Jerry Zhang

Two attempted robberies occurred on Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) campus within 24 hours of each other, leaving one student and two members of the public injured on Oct. 11.

The first incident occurred just after midnight on Oct. 11 near Nelson Mandela Walk and Gould Street. The second occurred near Gould Street and Victoria Street just before midnight on Oct. 12.

According to the incident report, the first robbery occurred at 12:15 a.m. TMU security witnessed two individuals punching and kicking a TMU community member and a member of the public. The perpetrators attempted to take their belongings. Security intervened and the perpetrators left campus.

The two victims sustained minor injuries and one was transported to the hospital, according to the Toronto Police Service (TPS). The victims sustained “visible” injuries according to the TMU Community Safety and Security incident report

TPS confirmed that nothing was stolen from the victims during the assault, in an emailed response to The Eyeopener.

“One person has been arrested, and one suspect is outstanding…Nothing was obtained,” TPS stated in their response.

One of the victims posted a story on their Instagram account shortly after the assault urging TMU students to stay safe on campus.

“Stay alert, be safe and don’t forget about the blue emergency poles where security will arrive in [two minutes],” the post reads.

The Eye reached out to the victims as well as TMU security but did not receive a response in time for publication.

TPS notified The Eye about another incident that occurred on campus later that day.

“We have another attempted robbery on Oct. 11 at approximately 11:52 p.m. in the Gould Street and Victoria Street area. Suspects are still outstanding,” TPS added in the email response. “The victim had minor injuries.”

According to the incident report of the second robbery from TMU Community Safety and Security, a member of the public reported that four individuals tried to take their belongings and they were punched when resisting.

“The member of the public resisted and was punched in the head multiple times by the individuals who then left campus. The member of the public sustained visible injuries, and medical assistance was provided by security,” the report stated.

Incident reports for both events were added to the TMU Safe Incident report website on Oct. 18.
