The Eyeopener has numerous talented and hard-working volunteers that contribute to our paper weekly. We always welcome and actively seek new volunteers to contribute by:

  • Writing articles
  • Taking photographs
  • Shooting and editing videos
  • Designing graphics and illustrations
  • Creating comics and satire
  • Copy editing and fact checking

No prior experience is required to volunteer. Students can choose to volunteer at The Eyeopener at any time during the school year. There is no obligation to commit to completing tasks every week. Our volunteers sign-up for tasks when they want and are able to.

Many of our volunteers have also become masthead members. The Eyeopener holds masthead elections at the end of the fall and winter semester. Any student is eligible to run. Stay tuned to our social media  for further details closer to election time.

Getting Started

Interested students can visit our contact page to get in touch with the appropriate section editor, or fill out our general volunteer sign-up form here

Additionally, students can request to join The Eye’s contributor page on Facebook where we post story callouts, updates and event invites for our contributors.

We also have an office on the second floor of the Student Campus Centre (55 Gould Street, Toronto, ON, M5B 1E9) but please note that due to COVID-19, our office is for masthead only until further notice.

Pitching to The Eye

While our editors are always coming with new ideas, there are times that students might catch something we don’t or think of a new perspective that could be added to s tory.

Each of our section editors assign stories on a weekly basis but also accepts pitches at any time.

For more guidance on pitching, please read our Submission Guide

  1. Hi! I am interested in a volunteer position. I’m in second-year Sport Media. I know times are weird right now but I would love to create some graphics and write some articles over the summer and possibly also shoot photo/video at sporting events once school starts in the fall! I’m really interested in a future career in graphic design, social media or video editing/producing. I can definitely send over samples of my work if you’re interested.

    1. Hi Erika,

Thanks for your interest. Our sports editor will be in touch with you.

  2. Hello! I hope all is well, I am very interested in a volunteer position. I am going into my second year in Photography Studies, and I would love the opportunity to volunteer with taking photos of sport events and things going on around Ryerson once everything goes back to normal as well as if there is anything I can do during the summer months. I think this is a wonderful opportunity, to get involved in the Ryerson community as well as experience, expanding my eye and documantion skills. I think this is such a wonderful team and I would love to work alongside. I am very passionate in pursuing Photography in the future and I think this is an amazing opportunity. I would be more then happy to send over some of my work if you are interested, thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Peyton — thanks so much for your interest. I’ve passed along your message to the photo team, as well as our sports editor. They’ll reach out to you shortly!

  4. Hi there! I’m a first-year undergrad in the English Program with a special interest in journalism, writing and advocating for social issues. I admire what The Eyeopener stands for and would love to volunteer for the team. So if there are any opportunities in which I can contribute, please reach out!

      1. Hey! I’m a first year journalist student, and think the student paper would be a great opportunity to work in a field I am interested in, and gain such useful advice and help from others. I love what the paper stands for & I have spent many hours reading previous stories & I love what student editors bring! I think volunteering for the paper would be awesome, if there are any possibilities for that I would love to work with you.
