It sure doesn’t get any better for the Toronto Stingers. Ryerson’s unofficial women’s hockey team is 8-2 and have won their last seven games.
Stingers goaltender Cassy Stafford has given the team a boost with four shutouts. The second-year nursing student can take a lot of credit for the team’s sucess. She is the best goalie in the league with a 0.428 goals against average. She credits part of her success on the fact that she has been practicing breakaways.
“We’re doing fairly well. I’m hoping we can bump up the level next year so we can become a varsity team,” she said, adding that acquiring new players has strengthened the lineup. “We picked up a couple of players. The word is getting out there so we’re getting more players and learning as a team.”
The Stingers aren’t part of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league, so the team plays in the fourth tier of the Golden Blades Women’s Hockey League at York University. The Stingers can’t be called the Ryerson Rams until they compete in a different league for at least two years on probationary status.
The team will hope to extend their unbeaten streak on Friday at the York University Ice Gardens when they face off against the Cougars.
