Third-year film student Nadia Marzouca died on campus on Sept. 29, according to a letter sent out by Charles Falzon.
Falzon, the dean of the Faculty of Communication And Design, sent out the news in an email to staff and students on Wednesday morning.
“She was an amazing student, an amazing colleague of lots of friends,” Falzon told The Eyeopener. “The sadness is overwhelming at the moment, for whether you’re faculty, staff, [or] students, who are all coming together to share this grief.”
Police were called to the scene — 120 Bond St. — at 12:04 a.m and say it was a “non-suspicious death.” Toronto paramedics pronounced Marzouca dead on the scene.
“We have no reason to believe there was any foul play,” said vice-provost students Heather Lane Vetere, adding that she “was informed by security via text message around 12:30 in the morning [on Sept. 29].”
The film she recently worked on — Meeting Paris — as a second camera assistant put out a statement on their Facebook page. “Our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones who were fortunate enough to have Nadia in their lives,” the statement read. “You’ll deeply be missed by everyone and will always be remembered for your kindness, friendship, and elaborate ways of clapping to make every cast and crew member smile in -40 weather.”
Recent Ryerson graduate Ryan McKenna, who knew Marzouca through the Ryerson Communication and Design Society, said he was shocked when he heard the news and called her a “very energetic person” and “very involved on campus.”
A drop-in for students who want to connect, grieve together and seek support is taking place in the Image Arts building. It began at 12 p.m.
More to come.
