Adventures in discipline: February 15, 1995

When the mood of the moment turns to romance, some lovers draw the blinds, dim the lights, chill the champagne and slip into something comfortable. Some, however, opt for something a little more adventurous—like whips and handcuffs, for example.

For theatre fans and S&M adventurers alike, some sadomasochistic play may provide just the right setting for a sensuous night out.

D&R Dungeons, at Sherbourne and Shuter Streets, is one of the oldest businesses of its kind in Toronto. Its owner, Slave Master Kirk, is at 32, the “grandfather of the business,” first opening his gates six years ago. “It’s lucrative,” he says, “we’re booked back to back, every day, every hour on the hour.”

People from all over come to participate in sadomasochistic scenarios with the 12 dominant and submissive women performers involving “pleasure torture, tickle torture, verbal abuse, humiliation, degradation, immobilization, suspension, mummification, hot wax, spanking, whipping, paddling and caning. They also get into gags, blindfolds, hoods, collars, lashes, leather and rope bondage.”

“We get into pretty well everything except for intercourse,” says Kirk. The performers will also receive oral sex from clients or give oral sex, with a condom.

Kirk says people are attracted to the fantasy and the escape from reality that sadomasochism provides. “From Doctors, lawyers, football players—people that are very well known in the community, including old mayors,” he says. “A lot of celebrities come to us.”

Some of the most popular scenarios involve struggling, abduction, interrogation and French Maid scenes, but Kirk says the most popular fantasy is the schoolgirl. “It’s always that way,” he says.

A night of this tantalizing entertainment can be costly. Females pay $200 an hour, males $150. The dominatrixes are aged 18 to 45 and Kirk says they come from all walks of life—”Some of them go to Ryerson,” he says.
