Smokers’ haven at Ryerson

By Deborah Gardner

Students heading to The Cavern may still be able to light up when Toronto’s smoking ban takes effect in March.

Ken James, former facility manager of Oakham House, hopes Toronto will allow them to use The Cavern as the required 25 per cent smoking area.

The City of Toronto’s non-smoking bylaw required all establishments to have a separately ventilated room of no more than 25 per cent of the building for smokers.

“One of the things we’re going to approach the city on is the 25 per cent. If the 25 per cent of our building is basement, it would be a logical decision for us,” said James.

The Cavern has a different heating and air conditioning system than the cafe upstairs. James is hoping this will satisfy the city’s mandate.

“We have separate heating and air conditioning ventilation to almost every room in the house,” said James.

Although business hasn’t been great at The Cavern since it opened in September, allowing smoking there will give student smokers a place to socialize on campus.
