Rocket ride reduction?

By Jackie Burns

Commuting students may soon have an extra $23 a month to drop at the bar if Barbara Hall has her way.

Standing outside Ryerson’ Jorgenson Hall on Tuesday, the Toronto mayor announced to passers-by her plan — if she is elected mega-city mayor — to create a special $60 Metro pass for post-secondary students. A regular Metropass costs $83.

“This proposal is an attempt to assist you in dealing with the major financial burdens you are facing,” she said to cheers from students.

Gord Tanner, RyeSAC’s v.p. education, thanked Hall for listening to students’ financial concerns, adding the fight for a reduced transit pass has spanned over 20 years.

Students would pay for the proposed pass each month through a bank-debit system.

The pass would be available for 13,000 students, but would not include weekend travel.
