Ryerson grads are stylin’

By Owen Ferguson

Ryerson grads continue to dominate the Toronto fashion scene, according to the City of Toronto’s Excellence in Fashion Design award.

This year’s award winner in the Fashion Graduate category was Ryerson student Kelly Smith, for his collection of what he refers to as “unconventional responses to conventional body perceptions.”

Smith is not the first, but the latest in a line of Ryerson fashion grads who have won the award, which is open to all fashion graduates in the greater Toronto area.

The last four people to win the award were also Ryerson grads, all of whom have since gone on to start their own fashion lines.

Although organizers are unsure if the award will include any money(the award ceremonies are not until December), the awards are still a much-coveted addition to any fashion grad’s resume.

“Basically, your peers are saying to you, ‘you are the best,’ ” said  Laurie Belzack, coordinator of Metro Toronto’s fashion industry liaison committee.
