Student reps meet minister

By Siri Agrell

Erin George, chair of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario was granted a meeting with the Minister of Colleges, Training and Universities Nov. 15 after protesting a Tory “Take Our Kids to Work Day” press conference earlier in the month.

She met with Diane Cunningham to discuss deregulation, tuition freezes, the York University strike and faculty shortages.

The meeting precedes the Dec. 5 review of proposed bill that would allow private, degree-granting universities in Ontario.

Although CFS-O believes the bill will result in the increase of tuition fees at existing universities, the ministry says that wouldn’t be the case.

“The minister has committed to freezing tuition hikes at two per cent a year for the next five years,” said Kerry Kincade-Delaney, a spokesperson for the minister.
