Student charged in alleged hate crime

By Sarah Del Giallo

A Ryerson student was allegedly involved in a hate crime early on Saturday Jan. 22
at Mehran Restaurant on Church Street.

Eoin McManus, 21, and friend Benjamin McCall, 21, have both been charged with
two counts of assault and one count of mischief.

The two men allegedly beat Ryan Lester, 30, and his 24-year-old brother Ben while
making homophobic slurs.

The Toronto Police say that the victims did not provoke the men in anyway, and are
calling the incident a hate crime.

Mehran Restaurant is located on the corner of Church and McGill streets, just north
of Ryerson campus and just south of the heart of the Gay Village.

MORE TO COME.
