The Ryerson men’s hockey team played its home opener on Friday before a near-capacity crowd, losing 5-3 to the Queen’s Gaels.

The Rams got themselves in a hole early and trailed for the entire game, despite outshooting the Gaels by a wide margin.

Ryerson made it a 3-4 game with 10 minutes to play in the third period, but it was a case of “too little, too late,” as they were unable to tie before the Gaels scored on an empty net in the final minutes.

While disappointed with the game’s outcome, players were encouraged by the fan turnout.

“This is obviously a huge change from George Bell,” said defenceman Brian Birkhoff. “It just goes to show how much student support we really have.”

The Rams play the RMC Paladins Saturday at GM Centre in Oshawa at 7 p.m.
