Women lose basketball opener

By Charles Vanegas

The Ryerson women’s basketball team opened the season on a low, losing 63-52 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The Rams held a 35-25 lead at halftime, but couldn’t maintain the momentum, scoring only 17 points in the entire second half.

“We were up ten, and then we just didn’t come out strong,” said fourth-year guard Dayana Gechkova.

Gechkova and guard Kelcey Wright led the team with 11 and 17 points respectively.

The Rams are without star forward Angela Tilk — who will miss the entire season after suffering a leg injury in preseason play — and couldn’t hide the hole in their lineup.

“She would have helped us out a lot, but we have to work with what we have,” said Gechkova. “The other girls have to step it up.”

Starting point guard Chloe Mago sat on the bench, but did not play.

The Rams host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
