The Ryerson men’s hockey team earned their biggest win of the season Friday, shocking the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) Patriotes — the fourth-ranked team in the country — with a score of 3-1.

“It’s a huge win,” said Rams head coach Graham Wise. “I thought we battled really hard.”

Goaltender Troy Passingham made 28 saves — including 14 in the third period alone. None were better than a key save in which the puck got past him and almost trickled over the line, before Passingham was able to turn around and get his glove on it.

“It just kept rolling away from me,” Passingham said. “It was on the line but it didn’t go in for sure.”

Dan Lombardi, Steve Taylor and Brian Birkhoff all had goals for the Rams.

The game was a penalty-filled affair, with both teams spending over 30 minutes in the box.

“When you play a team like that, a first place team, you know they are going to play hard,” Lombardi said. “You can’t let them walk all over you.”

The Rams play their final home game of the season on Saturday against the Concordia Stingers at 2 p.m. This game is crucial, as the Rams are just two points ahead in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the OUA East.

“We have some food coming now and we have to get a good nights rest,” said Lombardi. “We have to be ready to play tomorrow if we want to make the playoffs.”

  1. Wasn’t sure whether to go to this game or the basketball game. I’m glad I picked this one, even though I did make it to the basketball game during intermissions too.
