Rams score first win of the season

By Daniel Morand

The Ryerson Rams men’s soccer team (1-0-1) blanked the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-1-0) 2-0 to capture their first win of the season at Monarch Park Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Fifth-year Armin Tankovic netted the game winner off Michael Jan’s cross from the right side of the field in the 71st minute and Alex Braletic scored his second goal of the season in injury time to ensure a Rams victory.

“It was fumbling in and out. Michael got a foot to it, put it low and hard past the goalkeeper and I made sure I framed the net,” said Tankovic.

With Saturday’s win, the squad has not lost a regular season match in 15 consecutive games. The streak dates back to Sept. 2, 2012 in a loss against Carleton.

Ryerson controlled possession for most of the game, outshooting Laurentian 11-4. Seven different Rams players recorded a shot on net, while merely two Voyageurs placed shots on Rams goaltender Christian Maraldo.

“Laurentian plays a unique style, they’re very physical, but I thought we had the majority of the play. We had more scoring chances than they did,” said Rams associate head coach Filip Prostran.

Maraldo recorded his first shutout of the year, accompanied by a bloody nose after taking a ball to the face in the second half.

“He’s a tough kid, he’ll be okay,” said Prostran.“He played solid, he didn’t have a lot of work today, but early on he had a big save he had to make and had to be sure with his hands.”

In three meetings last year, Ryerson outscored Laurentian 4-1. The last time the Rams lost to Laurentian dates back to Oct. 2, 2011.

The Rams will look to continue this streak today against the Nipissing Lakers at Monarch Park Stadium at 2:15 p.m.
