Man responsible for death of Ryerson student commits suicide in jail

By Sierra Bein

A man convicted in the murder of a Ryerson student has committed suicide in jail, the Toronto Sun reports.

Farshad Badakhshan hung himself last Thursday at the Metro West Detention Centre.

Badakhshan was 31 and plead not criminally responsible due to mental illness in court, after he admitted to killing his then 23-year-old girlfriend, Carina Petrache in July 2010.

He slit Petrache’s throat, stabbed her multiple times and set fire to the room they were both occupying.

The jury reached the verdict April 25, and Badakhshan was automatically serving a life sentence. His sentencing hearing was set to be held June 16.

The suicide is being investigated by 23 Division’s criminal investigation bureau. Badakhshan was wheelchair bound from the severe burns in the 2010 fire, his death will be scrutinized by a coroner’s inquest, according to The Sun.
