The Eye’s guide to back-to-school outfits

By Allison Baldwin

The perfect back-to-school wardrobe blends effortless style with sophistication. While dressing fashionably can be crucial for some students, comfort and practicality are key when navigating day-to-day activities on campus.

Students often gravitate towards low-maintenance outfits that require little to no planning throughout the semester, so having a few timeless basics you can reach for in your closet can help you put together a presentable look for any occasion.

Whether you’re searching for practical outfit ideas for 8 a.m. lectures or want to branch out and try a new style to impress your classmates, this guide has you covered.

Denim is one of the biggest staples in building a versatile wardrobe. This closet essential can be used to complete any outfit, seamlessly dressing it up or down.

This denim-on-denim look is a simple and stylish way to assemble a matching set while experimenting with different shapes, cuts and shades. Denim is also found in most wardrobes and can be a reliable go-to piece.

“The denim-on-denim ensemble has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a chic and versatile statement that is taking the fashion world by storm in 2024,” wrote Le Jean Bleu blogger Obi Berlach.

The Canadian tuxedo taps into the nostalgia for the 1990s and early 2000s fashion while reimagining it to fit current denim trends such as the barrel-leg silhouette.

The blazer is an example of a fashion fundamental that can easily enhance an outfit and take it to the next level. When paired with tailored trousers, it creates a polished appearance as the two timeless pieces complement each other.

Finding the right-fitting blazer and trousers is essential. If you’re hoping to combine two different silhouettes, experimenting with various lengths and fits can elevate your workwear and provide you with a sense of professionalism.

Reaching for a cinched waist blazer puts a modern rendition on the classic jacket while enhancing your figure. In terms of trousers, British Vogue described minimalist trousers as a sensible cornerstone to a perfect wardrobe.

While oversized sweaters and maxi skirts are famous fall favourites on their own, putting the two together allows for a comfy yet chic combination of styles.

This pairing is cozy and, most importantly, appropriate for Toronto’s cold weather during the fall and winter. Blending the comfort of a warm sweater with the elegance of a long skirt is a fun way to try out different textures and structures.

When experimenting with the two, InStyle fashion writer Amber Rambharose advised to keep complementary fabrics, patterns and styles in mind. “One way to create a stellar skirt-and-sweater outfit is to combine separates that share textures and patterns,” she wrote.

Regarding structures, Rhambarose said the juxtaposition of pieces, such as a soft ruffled sweater and a structured skirt, can convey a high-fashion effect.

There are a few colours that scream fall; red and all its shades are among them. While many opt for dark and neutral shades of grey, black and brown, a pop of red in your wardrobe is an exciting way to spice up any outfit. Even when done subtly through accessories like handbags and boots, it will still make a bold statement.

According to a 2024 Style Machine article, the key to wearing red masterfully is to seamlessly incorporate a single element of red in an otherwise neutral ensemble, ultimately creating a focal point that draws attention but does not take over the entire look. It’s a fine balance between keeping it simple and making a statement.

Finding universal accessories that can complement many outfits is another easy way to build up a look.

The editor of the fashion blog Who What Wear, Avalon Afriyie, said that accessories hold great power when elevating your clothing—even in the most refined of ensembles.

Including suede accents in your attire is a game-changer for fall and winter. Suede accessories give a luxurious spin to your outfits due to their velvety texture and timeless charm.

In addition, square-toed boots have replaced the popular pointed-toed boots this autumn as the perfect style of cold-weather footwear into your wardrobe. The retro-inspired style is back in full force according to  L’Officiel writer, Caroline Cubbin.

Lastly, mixing metals in jewelry is an up-and-coming approach to experimenting with accessories in the new school year. Embracing the mix of the two finishes can be seen as a bold way to stand out from the crowd. Combining different metals in your jewelry adds depth and dimension to any outfit as the warm and cool tones contrast, ultimately drawing in the eye.
