Rams slap Guelph with 48 point win

By Charles Vanegas

The Ryerson men’s basketball team followed up its big win in the season opener against Lakehead with a dominating 91-43 performance on Saturday against the Guelph Gryphons. The Rams were led offensively by shooting guard Jordon Gauthier’s 19 points and 13 rebounds and point guard Jahmal Jones’ 15 points.

After leading by 17 at halftime, the Rams received a surge of energy from their bench, outscoring the Gryphons 48-17 in the second half.

“We have one of the deepest teams in the country,” said fourth-year guard Afeworki Gebrekerestos. “From our last guy to our first guy, everyone can contribute. It’s really special to see.”

First-year guard Jeremiah Wheatle had 10 points after shooting a perfect 4-4 from the floor. Wheatle, an unrecruited player, said he was just thankful to have been given the chance to play.

“It’s an incredible feeling, coming from where I’m coming from. Long story, long route, [being] a mature student, a walk-on,” said Wheatle. “I’m happy for the opportunity and I’m going to make the best of it.”

The Rams will head to Waterloo next weekend to take on the Waterloo Warriors and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Their next home game is Nov. 30 against Brock University.
