With summer coming to a close, that only means one thing: the Ryerson Rams men’s and women’s varsity soccer season is about to begin.
Both teams are coming into this season with high hopes to improve upon last year’s success. Last year, the women’s team finished with a record of 6-8-2, tying the most wins in a season for the women’s soccer program.
Coming off a successful season, the women’s team will look to keep the momentum from last season into this season. That being said, there will be a lot of learning for the women’s team as they are still very young.
The Rams team is full of freshman players and they will have to depend heavily on the few veterans they have to lead them through the season and hopefully into the playoffs. The Rams start their season on Friday in Sudbury against Laurentian.
The men’s soccer team, like the women, are coming off another successful season. After winning the OUA East division for the third year in a row with a record of 11-2-3, the Rams look to continue their success. They have their eyes set on making it past the OUA final four tournament and into the CIS National Championship tournament.
The men’s team had a busy summer, recruiting younger players to help fill the void after losing key veterans like Jacob O’Connor and Martin Dabrowski, who were fifth-year seniors last year.
Although those two players were important in the success of the Rams for the past few seasons, there is still a lot of senior talent on the team, like last year’s OUA East MVP Raheem Rose and OUA All-Star Kyle Stewart.
The Rams also retain strong young players like Matthew Isabella and Mohamad Abdallah, who know what it takes to compete at a high level after completing their first successful season with the Rams last year.
The men’s team has all the necessary pieces for a successful season. Their first game will be Friday, Aug. 26th against Laurentian.
Your first chance to come out and support both the men’s and women’s team in action will be this Sunday at Monarch Park Stadium, when both teams look to take on the Nipissing Lakers.
