Actually, R.Y.E. isn’t an acronym at Ryerson. But we’re surrounded by a plethora of organizations represented by their initials, and we don’t just mean the RSU and CESAR. Plus, a lot of them research some really cool stuff. So check out…
Campus acronyms
CUE — Centre for Urban Energy. Ryerson established this “unique research and technology demonstration centre” last September, with the goal of addressing urban (read: city) energy challenges. On March 25, CUE gave $100,000 to 20 students conducting related research. You can read more here.
CSCA — Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity. This centre researches private-sector economic activities that affect consumers, such as retailing, financial institutions and developing malls and offices. Located on the 9th floor of the Ted Rogers School of Management.
CERIS — The Ontario Metropolis Centre. It’s not called the OMC because this organization, which researches immigration and settlement in urban areas, was once called the Joint Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Settlement.
RCG Insight — RCG stands for Ryerson Consulting Group. It’s been around since 1972, and the consultants come from a variety of undergraduate business programs offered at Ryerson. The consultants devise business plans, complete industry analysis and develop website to fit their clients’ needs — among other things. Located on the 8th floor of the Ted Rogers School of Management.
RCYCP — Relationship Child and Youth Care Practice, the name of an academic journal. The managing editor, Carol Stuart, is a child and youth care professor at Ryerson. The journal’s office is located in the SHE building.
ORS — Office of Research Services. The happy people in the building at 1 Dundas St. W. help with Ryerson research initiatives. Too many duties to list, but sometimes they have interesting research opportunities for students.
RI — Ryerson International. Takes care of a whole bunch of international initiatives at Ryerson. If you’re a student, RI can help with studying or working abroad. They also take care of exchange students. Located in Suite 1100 at 1 Dundas St. W.
RCS — Ryerson Commerce Society presents the four business schools within the faculty of business. It has its own board of governors, executive team, directors and staff. Lots of services and activities here.
RESS — Ryerson Engineering Student Society. The RESS website offers wacky merch (example: a t-shirt that reads “My Drinking Team Has an Engineering Problem”) and lists upcoming events. There’s also a link to the Golden Ram, a newspaper put out by the engineers roughly once a month. I recommend the Movember issue.
CEHSSM (sometimes just referred to as CEHSM) — Centre for Environmental Health, Safety and Security Management. Director Julia Lewis and the rest of the staff make sure Ryerson doesn’t actually kill you… even if it feels as if you’re drowning in schoolwork.
Email submission (Thanks, Rohan!): SIFE — Students in Free Enterprise. This group of students use entrepreneurship to develop a better and sustainable world. Ryerson’s chapter won a boatload of awards in 2010, plus two other regional championships this March.
