Ryerson student charged with assault after turning herself in

By Maggie Macintosh

The Ryerson University student who allegedly assaulted anti-choice protestors on campus earlier this month has turned herself in to police.

Toronto Police confirmed Gabriela Skwarko, a Ryerson Arts and Contemporary Studies student and member of the Ryerson Reproductive Justice Collective (RRJC), turned herself in to police on Oct. 26, after she was approached by detectives who advised her to do so.

Toronto Against Abortion posted a video of Skwarko pushing and throwing items at anti-choice protestors at the Gould and Victoria streets intersection on Oct. 1.

Skwarko is facing two charges, one for assault and another for assault with a weapon.

She was released on a promise to appear in court.

Police said she’s expected to appear in court in six to eight weeks.

Correction: The Eyeopener previously stated that Gabriela Skwarko was an Arts and Contemporary Sciences. The Eyeopener regrets this error.

These anti-lifers certainly can get aggressive.

Both sides can be passionate, but the anti-lifers are more likely to commit violence these days. I think it is because they are more prone to be so immersed in their ideology that they lose sight of the humanity of those that disagree with them.
