Tre Folkes, a second-year forward who has appeared in just one game this season for the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team, has decided to leave the team, The Eye has learned. The team didn’t reach out in time before publication.
Prior to coming to Ryerson, Folkes, a native of Toronto, played for the Smiths Falls Bears of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). Folkes was added to the Ryerson recruiting class in 2017-18 and played in 14 games last season, notching one goal and two assists while racking up four penalty minutes.
In the lone game he played this season, he did not tally a point or record a penalty minute. Earlier this season, Folkes was named a U-Sports Academic All-Canadian, along with teammates Taylor Dupuis and Brandon Hughes.
Though he is departing the program, Folkes, 22, is not leaving on bad terms, according to Rams PA announcer Kevin MacDonald. His decision to leave is mostly based around his desire to focus on other aspects of his life. Beyond the initial announcement made on his (private) Instagram account last week, not much is known about the nature or logistics of his departure.
The Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team, who currently sit in first place of the OUA West division with a record of 12-3-1, will head to St. Catharines to battle the Brock Badgers on January 4th. Their first game after the holiday break will begin at 7:15 PM ET.
