Vietnam Association President will appeal RSU decision
The president of the Vietnamese Students’ Association plans to appeal calls for his resignation.
The Ryerson Student Groups Committee asked Paul Vu and treasurer, Mai Cao to resign after false expense receipts were submitted to RSU. The group claimed expenses that included light bulbs, a car battery and groceries. Vu maintains his innocence, and plans to appeal the committee’s decision to place the VVSA on a one-year probation.
Student Groups Director Chris Panagopoulous says Vu is appealing the one-year probation on the grounds it will severely affect the incoming executive.
Meanwhile, Student Groups Coordinator Leatrice Spevack says Cao has already agreed to resign, but added that Vu doesn’t wish to step down until the VSA holds its elections next fall.
Spevack said the Vietnamese Students’ Association claimed they had lost their receipts for an event held last October. The receipts were allegedly replaced with others that dated from July and August.
The appeal is scheduled to be heard at the February 9 RSU Board of Directors meeting.
Student job guide offers employment advice
Take heart students, there are jobs out there. That’s the message Kevin Makra of the Student Employment Network wants to convey in the 1995 Ontario Student Employment Guide.
Working with a group of unemployed students and graduates, Marka gathered vital information from 260 Ontario companies for the guide.
“It’s information students should know,” Makra said. “Most students don’t understand what companies are looking for. We’re trying to provide opportunities for students.”
Ryerson Career Centre Manager Nancy Trefiak considers the guide to be a valuable reference for young people.
“80 per cent of jobs are never advertised,” she says. “It’s critical (that) you look at the hidden job market.”
The guide is available at university and college bookstores across the province.
New Ryerson president appointed
Dr. Claude Lajeunesse will take the seat as Ryerson’s new president this fall.
The appointment, which was announced at a special meeting of the Board of Governors, takes effect September 1. Board of Governors Chairman John Sharpe says Lajeunesse has been working as the President and CEO of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) for the past six years. He has held various leadership positions since 1984, including a term as General Manager of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers.
Lajeunesse takes over from current president Terry Grier. Sharpe says both will work together in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.
