Hair peeve: February 15, 1995

By Jacqueline Davis

In the Jan. 18 edition of The Eyeopener an ad offers men a haircut for $18. Women can get the same cut for $25. I called the salon to ask why. The woman who answered sounded confused but eventually explained that women have longer hair and require more styling. I told her that I am a woman with short hair which only needs to be trimmed. She explained that most hair salons charge separate rates. I explained that the number of places doing something does not make that practice right. Before long I was put on hold and then conveniently forgotten.

This is an example of a clear and unnecessary inequality which also extends to the price women pay for shoes and clothing. Refuse to pay more. If it means that you have to let your hair grow long and shaggy, do it anyway! As for advertising and therefore promoting these double standards, I suggest writing to editors of offending publications and requesting that the ad be removed. Sometimes the most difficult thing about change is being bothered enough to ask for it.
