In the last year the Canadian basketball scene has been in a state of turmoil.
There has been a drastic increase in violence in Metro high school leagues, where in the most recent incident Geroges Vanier coach Ken Earthy was hit in the head with a bench during a brawl between fans and players.
Last year there were charges of racism within the National team program. Although Ken Shields, the National team coach, was cleared of any wrongdoing, he resigned shortly after Canada’s poor showing in the World Championships held in Toronto last August.
In light of this, Ryerson Rams assistant coach Richard Dean has organized a panel discussion entitled Basketball, Race, Violence & The Media.
As of yesterday, Dean was still trying to confirm panelists but hopes to have the likes of Laura Robinson (Now magazine), Craig Daniels (Toronto Sun), David Grossman (Toronto Star), Robert MacLeod (Globe & Mail) and Nick Davis (The Metro Word).
The discussion will be held next Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. in room A60 of Jorgenson Hall.
