Youth Council Pow Wow: March 15, 1995

By Carolyn Gruske

Over 300 native American dancers, drummers, singers and vendors were on hand at last weekend’s Native Canadian Centre of Toronto’s Youth Council event entitled, “The Nurturing of our Youth…Leaders for Tomorrow.” The Pow Wow, held at the Moss Park Armouries, brought the native way of life to young people.

“Our purpose is to expose our youth to traditional cultural activities, Pow Wows and camping,” said Martin John, the Centre’s program coordinator.

The Pow Wow was structured as a competition with $21,000 in prize money. Dances were divided into several categories, including grass, jingle and fancy styles. John says he is proud of the council’s efforts.

“They have taken on a lot of responsibility and their behaviour was reflective of the Native Centre.”
