The Ryerson women’s basketball team’s best performance at York last week was not on the court, but in the stands.
The women cheered the men’s team and helped work the crowd into a frenzy during the men’s Friday night OUA East-clinching win over Carleton.
The Ryerson women’s season ended Thursday night thanks to a 80-61 pounding from the top-ranked Laurentian Lady Vees.
Ryerson was confident they could shake off their season’s disastrous second half and upset the top seed in the OUA East, but the Rams were clearly no match for the squad from Sudbury, which controlled the game right from the tip-off.
The Rams couldn’t get anything going in the first. Laurentian built a 17-point lead by the half thanks to Ryerson turnovers in its own end.
The Ryerson women did make sure their final game of the season wasn’t an embarrassment. In the second half, they were outscored by only two.
“There have been sparks of good and sparks of really bad on this team. Turnovers totally killed us,” said Rams all-star guard Miruna Muller, who led the team with 12 points on Thursday.
“[Laurentian was] a very disciplined team and when we made mistakes, they capitalized,” head coach Sandra Pothier said.
The Rams were also unable to contain OUA East division MVP Stephanie Harrison. The 6’3” Laurentian centre scored 18 points in just 21 minutes. She won most battles underneath the net and hit 70 per cent of her shots.
The Rams were killed at the three point line too. Laurentian hit 6-13, while the Rams hit 1-11.
Ryerson finishes with an overall record of 18-17, but they are 8-12 in OUA league play.
“In the second half of the season we lost a lot games that we should have won. But it’s not a minor accomplishment making it to the playoffs. I’m proud of my team for making it to the playoffs. We got beat by a very good team,” Pothier said.
