Ryerson’s women’s volleyball team capped an incredible turnaround season last weekend with two dominant wins over the lakehead Thunderwolves.
The Rams, who were a pitiful 1-11 last season, have guaranteed themselves at least a .500 record and have clinched a playoff spot with one game to go.
This weekend they take their 5-4 record to the University of Ottawa and baring the results, they will end the season in either third or fourth place. In the playoff tournament at the University of Toronto, February 25-27, they will face either the U of T, currently 8-1 York, 7-1.
Saturday the Rams triumphed over the winless Thunderwolves by scores; 25-22, 11-25, 25-23 and 25-18, thanks to some great blocking by Marijana Curic and timely smashes by Sou Chanthapanya.
Sunday the Rams completed the Lakehead sweep with a convincing three-set win, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20.
Elizabeth Reid, a second-year player on the Rams, believes the games were a perfect tune-up for the playoffs.
“We really struggled at times {Saturday and Sunday] but overall, I thought we played really well,” she said.
Reid said there are many things the Rams have to work on to avoid getting booted out early by one of the powerhouses, either U of T or York.
“We have to concentrate on blocking,” she said. “We don’t want to have to rely on other teams’ mistakes.”
