WOMEN WIN

By Josh Wingrove

Ryerson’s volleyball program continues to excel in 2005, as the women’s team beat the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-2 (25-23, 12-25, 25-19, 20-25, 16-14).

The win was the second time the Rams have defeated Ottawa since the new year, improving their record to 4-8. “We kind of proved it wasn’t a fluke,” Rams’ centre Brianne Koning said of the repeat victory over Ottawa (7-4).

Koning is the only rookie who played each set against Ottawa, recording 7 kills and 10 points. “We’re getting a lot better at catching up and not dwelling on our mistakes,” Koning said. “We went in there saying we’re going to win. We need this win, we want this win this bad. I’m proud of everybody.”

This weekend, the team will face Royal Military College (0-13), and Queen’s University (5-7), whom the Rams defeated in an Ottawa tournament this month.

“We’re really hoping to beat Queen’s,” Koning said. The rookie is enjoying her season with the Rams. “All the girls are so tight,” Koning said. “I have no sisters, so they’re my sisters pretty much.”

The Rams play RMC at 1 p.m. this Saturday in the Kerr Hall gymnasium.
