RAMS BUMPED OUT

By Greg Harris

Sunday was an emotional day for the women’s volleyball team. Before playing their second game against Lakehead University, the one that could clinch them a playoff berth, the team honoured its five graduating players, including co-captains Anjela Wilson and Erin Gallagher.

Then they lost a hard-fought match in four sets. Several players were crying after the game. “I’m upset, because the girls all played like a team, and they did the best they could,” said coach Bob Cholette. “They all played very well as a team, and they kept it a good game.”

The team came into the weekend needing two wins to make the playoffs. They beat Lakehead in a thrilling five-set match on Saturday, after being down two sets to one. “We had watched so much of Lakehead and we knew going in that we were the better team,” Gallagher said after that win. “I don’t think anyone really got down (when trailing by a set). We came out on the court saying, ‘OK, we’re winning this one.'”

The team was in the same position on Sunday, but was unable to make another comeback. Gallagher was stunned.
