The Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team routed the Carleton Ravens 9-5 Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Left winger Daniel Lombardi stole the show, scoring four goals and adding two assists to help lift the Rams to a second straight win.
“My first goal, I quickly got a couple steps ahead of the defenceman in the neutral zone, and [Andrew] Buck made a nice pass,” said Lombardi. “I just made a quick move to the outside, and put it in.”
The Rams got things started quickly, as right-winger Victor Terreri scored his second of the season, only 1:16 into the game.
Defenceman Peter Hermenegildo chipped in his fourth goal of the season, and Lombardi scored his first of the night, to put the Rams up 3-0 barely halfway through the first period.
Ravens forward Joe Pleckaitis scored in the dying seconds of the period, to make it a two-goal game heading into the second.
Lackluster defence from the Rams allowed Carlton forwards Ryan MacLean and Jeff Hayes to score quickly, tying the game at three apiece.
“We would have liked to be a little more solid defensively,” said assistant coach Johnny Duco. “But that’s part of the game, and we were able to come back from it.”
For the rest of the second period, it was a back and forth affair, with Lombardi scoring his second goal of the night while on a Rams power play
Ravens forward Damian Cross briefly managed to tie the game at 4-4, until Rams left winger Jamie Wise knocked in his third of the season, giving the rams a 5-4 lead heading into the third.
The third period was all Ryerson, with the Rams out-scoring Carleton 4-1, the first of which came off the stick of Rams right-winger Matthew Andreacchi.
Andrew Buck would add another goal and Carleton would score their final goal of the night courtesy of forward Michael McNamee, to put the score at 7-5 in favour of the Rams.
Halfway through the third period, a scrum broke out at centre ice, Wise received a game misconduct for slashing. Carleton players Jake Cardwell and Jordan Deagle both received game misconduct.
Lombardi scored the next two goals, giving him a hat trick and then some, and the Rams a 9-5 lead, and ultimately the victory.
“Us sitting out, the standings got real tight, so we knew how important these four points this weekend were,” said Buck. “It’s still tight, so we have to focus on next week, but it does feel good getting the points this weekend.”
The Rams play their next game against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Nov. 22 in Sudbury, Ont.
