A group of students in the Ryerson architectural science department are looking to enhance education outside the classroom — and now they’re one step closer. The motion for a referendum to create an official architecture society was approved on Jan. 26 at the Board of Governors meeting.
Arc.soc (the name of the society) wants to bring more opportunities to the department and its students.
“We feel great. Students have been working on a lot of projects and I think they’re just waiting for this to happen,” said Shivathmikha Suresh Kumar, co-president of Arc.soc. “This is going to be a great kick-starter for the students who are participating.”
Co-president Naveed Khan says he’s optimistic going forward.
“In terms of success, we wouldn’t have brought this forward to the board if we didn’t think it would be a success and make a positive impact on our students,” he said. “We know for sure that this will be a success and will lead to bigger and better things for not only the department, but the entire university.”
Mohamed Lachemi, Ryerson’s interim president, added that it’s about time there was an association to represent the department.
“It’s a good move in the right direction,” he said.
