A pipe at the exterior of the Ryerson Student Centre has burst, according to Toronto Fire Services.
Fire crews say they believe the burst pipe is related to the building’s sprinkler system.
A spokesperson for Toronto Fire Services said it’s likely the pipe burst was caused by the cold weather.
“The pipes froze, most likely cracked but didn’t leak until we had a warmer day like this afternoon,” the spokesperson said. “Then they started to thaw out a bit and the water pressure burst the pipe.”
The spokesperson added that incidents like these are common, especially “after a deep freeze throughout the city.”
Ryerson Student Centre general manager Jennifer Stacey said she was notified about “some water damage,” but she does not know the extent or what caused it, adding that the building is closed indefinitely and the water supply has been cut off.
This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
