Independent candidate Marina Gerges has been elected president of the Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU) for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Gerges received 1,408 votes, which beat current RSU president Siddhanth Satish by 852 votes and Ahmed Ali by 874 votes. Satish received 556 votes, while Ali received 534 votes.
The executive team will consist of Umar Abdullah, a ‘Revolution’ candidate, as vice-president education; Areesha Qureshi, a Revolution candidate, as vice-president equity; Salar Syed, a Revolution candidate, as vice-president operations; and Ozioma Molokwu, an independent candidate, as vice-president student life and events.
Voting was held virtually from Feb. 2 to 4 on my.ryerson.
This year’s RSU elections consisted of many incidents of by-laws being broken, however, it is unclear whether any candidates were disqualified or given demerit points. RSU chief returning officer Jenna Rose did not respond to The Eyeopener’s request for clarification on the matter.
