Business management student Hamde Ahmed has been elected as vice president of student life of the Toronto Metropolitan Students’ Union (TMSU) after a run-off election held from Sept. 14 to 18.

Ahmed will take over from fifth-year creative industries student, Ahmmad Haidary, who held the position after the leading vice president student life candidate was disqualified in the Winter 2026 General Election. Under the Elections Procedures Code (EPC) section 11.5, the TMSU must hold another election for the position if a winning candidate is disqualified. 

The September run-off election was held after a previous run-off election announced for Aug. 21, 24 and 25 was delayed. 

The TMSU said in a statement to The Eyeopener the reason for the delayed summer election was because “an administrative error resulted in a communication that saw the run-off campaign and voting dates being announced prematurely.” The run-off election restricts new candidates from running and prohibits the returning candidates from making new campaign promises or new platforms. 

The TMSU said this was done in order to protect the integrity of the election. 

In the statement to The Eye, the TMSU wrote: “An important distinction is that TMSU is treating this as a continuation of the 2026 General Election, not the beginning of a new election. We are closing the loop on the outstanding Vice-President Student Life race and following the process set out in the EPC.”

According to Ahmed’s candidate statement, she ran to help create a campus culture where, “student life is accessible, inclusive, and shaped by the voices of students themselves.”

Ahmed wrote that if elected, she would be a, “visible, approachable and proactive VP who students feel comfortable approaching with ideas and perspectives.

Ahmed will be the only member of the TMSU’s executive committee who was not a member of Team Justice, the slate which won the remaining four executive positions during the Winter 2026 General Election.

The Eye reached out to Ahmed for comment but did not receive a reply in time for publication.
