Beast honored at banuqet: April 5, 1995

The hardware was hauled out last Wednesday when Ryerson’s student athletes were honoured at the 47th Annual Athletic Awards Banquet.

Alex “The Beast” Beason finished his collegiate career by taking home the Ryersonian Trophy for Male Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year. Beason led the Ontario Universities Athletic Association men’s basketball league in scoring, averaging 26.7 points per game, and was chosen as an OUAA First Team All-Star and CIAU Second Team All-Canadian for the second straight year. Beason plans to play professional basketball next year either in North America or in Europe.

The H.H. Kerr trophy for Female Athlete of the Year went to Jennifer Trabert for her contribution to fencing. Trabert came back after a year off from the fencing team to re-claim the OWIAA crown which she had won in ’93. She was the gold medalist in Individual Foil in Interuniversity competition, and Ontario Provincial Champion. Trabert will be graduating this year so the Ryerson fencing team will be looking for a new leader.

Karen Ure of the women’s basketball team picked up the RSU Trophy for Female Rookie of the Year, leading her team in rebounding this season, with 83 boards in league play and 80 in exhibition games. The Rams will need another strong season from Ure next year as the team is losing starters Tricia Eastman, Elizabeth Gilchrist, Amanda Parris and Darcel Wright to graduation.

Tunde Tairu of the men’s volleyball team received The Eyeopener Trophy for Male Rookie of the Year, amassing a total of 5 aces, 109 kills, 22 stuffs, and 136 points during the season. Tairu was one of only seven players that finished the year for the Rams. He will be joined by Paul Carter, Lorenzo Casullo, John Hillier and Jeffrey Rouse to lead the Rams next season.

Greatest Contribution Awards went to men’s basketball captain Lui Cinello, woh is graduating this year, and Tanis Darling of the women’s swim team, for their leadership and commitment to their respective teams and to the school. Nine Blue “R” awards, and two Gold “R” awards were handed out to athletes in recognition of their contributions to the Athletics program as well as academic success. Blue “R” recipients were: Lui Cinello, Basketball; Elizabeth Gilchrist, Basketball; Scott Belasco, Basektball; Sara Creighton-Wiebe, Squash; Paul Carter, Volleyball; Claire Manherz, Soccer; Ian Richardson, Hockey; Tanis Darling, Swimming; and Bonnie Somlyai, Badminton. Alex Beason and Jennifer Trabert each took home Gold “R” awards.
