Sports journalism has a tendency to fall into the trap of clichéd boosterism — especially with winners. One of the best stories this week is about the success of the Ryerson rowing team, which won a pair of gold medals for the first time in its history. Reporter Chelsea Miya spent a morning with the rowers, learning how to stroke and getting some insight into the team’s winning strategy.
But Miya avoids dwelling on their success and instead offers up a portrait of a team of neophytes whose dedication to the sport is turning them into serious contenders for the OUA championships.
Too bad no one at Ryerson seems to know they exist.
