BREAKING: TMU buildings lose power in downtown outage

By Vihaan Bhatnagar

Several buildings on the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) campus have lost power in an outage affecting a large part of the downtown core.

In an alert sent to students at 12:51 p.m., the university advised students in several buildings to evacuate, including the Student Learning Centre, the Library Building and the Podium.

They added that all classes, labs and exams in these buildings are expected to pause.

In an emailed statement to The Eyeopener, the university said all updates regarding the power failure will be communicated via TMU Safe.

Toronto Hydro’s outage map shows a larger power failure in the downtown core. The affected area appears to range from Dundas Street to as far as the waterfront.

Toronto Hydro told The Eye, “fire crews are onsite at Hydro One’s Terauley Transmission Station.” They said their crews are working to “assess the damage and begin restoring power.”

Toronto Hydro added that this is an “evolving situation” and they are unable to confirm an estimated time of restoration.

This is a developing story and will be updated as details emerge.
