Construction of Ryerson’s planned student centre could break ground by the end of this year and free up extra space in Jorgenson Hall to handle the huge influx of students, said RyeSAC’s v.p. finance and development.
Ken Marciniec, joined by architects from Carruthers Shaw & Partners Ltd. – the firm designing the Gould Street building – said if all goes well, the student centre could be completed by March 2003.
The 6,000-square-metre building will house all campus groups, student lounges, clubs and RyeSAC services, most of which are currently located in the basement of Jorgenson Hall.
The student campus centre, which several groups have been working to bring to fruition for about 50 years, will be erected in the empty lot between Oakham House and O’keefe House.
A committee is meeting to try to finalize designs.
“We are in the stages of preliminary design,” said Peter Pastor, who works at the firm. “There is still a bit of flux going on so we don’t want to distribute the design yet.”
Once vacated, former offices in Jorgenson Hall will be converted into classrooms to accommodate the double cohort in 2003, when two years worth of high school students will enter university at the same time.
