Student centre a go
Ryerson’s board of governors is supporting an $11-million plan for a new student centre.
“This is a historic occasion for the university,” Ryerson’s v.p. administration and student affairs, Linda Grayson, told the board of governors Monday. “It’s a significant declaration of who we are as a university and what we believe in.”
The board unanimously approved a financial plan put together by the student centre committee, which includes continuing to collect a $60 student fee to go toward the centre.
The next step will be to find an architect to design the new building, which is set to be erected at 55 Gould St., next to Oakham House.
GM exec honoured
The president and chair of Saturn Corporation, Cynthia Trudell, has been invited to the university’s Oct. 27 convocation ceremony to receive an honourary engineering degree.
Before moving to the General Motors subsidiary in 1999, Trudell was a chemical process engineering supervisor at General Motors’ Windsor Transmission Plant.
The Saint John, N.B. native received her undergraduate in chemical engineering from Acadia University and her doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Windsor.
Theatre delayed
Plans to build movie theatres on top of Ryerson’s parking garage have been delayed yet again.
PenEquity, the company building the AMC theatres at the corner of Yonge and Dundas Streets, and the Toronto Transit Commission are squabbling over who should pick up the tab for widening the Dundas Street subway platform.
The city will not give out construction permits until the two sides resolve the issue.
