Ryerson’s student campus centre may not be completed on time and is up to $1.6 million over budget, according to RyeSAC.
The RyeSAC project, more than a decade in the making, is scheduled to be ready for campus groups to move into by the end of the fall term.
A university source said there have been delays in construction that have added $1.6 million to the budget, a price tag RyeSAC President Dave MacLean confirmed last week.
That brings the projected cost of the building to about $14 million. There may still be more expenses, but they won’t be known until the centre is finished, said Derek Isber, vice president finance and services for RyeSAC.
Funds to pay for the centre come through student levies approved in the 1993 school year and in a referendum in 1998. Isber said students currently at Ryerson won’t have to pay more for any extra construction costs, adding the student union could use its contingency fund as another source of money.
Delays in the project have also pushed back the opening of Oakham House. Oakham could be open by October, but it may be later, RyeSAC said.
The Ram in the Rye won’t be open until 2005, as the campus pub and student centre will be connected. Last year, workers found contaminants in the soil, remnants from an old gas station that once stood on the site, said Ian Hamilton, director of campus planning and facilities.
Work on the centre also caused structural damage to O’Keefe House, which crews had to protect from construction activities.
