Students’ United swept the Ryerson Students’ Union election with an overwhelming number of votes in their favour on Feb. 9.
The official numbers came in just after 1 a.m. on Feb. 10 as the Students’ United team and supporters cheered them on in the Ram in the Rye pub. Onlookers and student media watched as the live numbers were updated from at 10 p.m. up until the official results later in the night.
“It’s really great to see our hard work pay off,” said Rodney Diverlus, who will enter his second term as VP Equity, a position that was newly created last year.
Diverlus will be joined by Caitlin Smith as president and Melissa Palermo as the VP education. Unopposed VP Operations candidate Sean Carson swept the yes or no vote with 2,132 in his favour, after opponent Mark Single was disqualified from the race last week. A total of 400 students voted against Carson. The final executive will be first-time runner Alyssa Williams in the VP student life and events position.
The opposing slate, RU Change, wasn’t present at the pub last night. Throughout the two hours no member of their slate showed any signs of a winning chance as the numbers rolled in.
Diverlus noticed an increase in voter turnout this year as three out of their five executive candidates pushed over the 2, 000 voter mark, compared to last year which only reached 1,400 votes per candidate as the highest number. Throughout all election categories, students spoiled a total of 644 votes.
The new Ryerson Students’ Union team will begin their term on May 1st and continue until April 30, 2012.

Very interesting that at each ballot count posting, the difference was always almost the exact same number between slates candidates , give or take about 10 votes .
